How do I know if my child is on track?
Each student enrolled in the Independent Education Program will be assigned a teacher-mentor. The mentor is available through e-mail, toll-free telephone calls, written communication or in person at the Monroe Virtual High School Center. The teacher-mentor will monitor the student's progress and send a periodic written report of progress. For students over 18 years of age, only the student will receive reports unless an agreement to share information has been signed. Students can monitor online courses on a continuous basis using the course manager system.
What tests are required?
The only tests related to course completion are those required by the course curriculum. To insure academic honesty, each test must be completed in a proctored setting. The Monroe Virtual High School program support teacher will arrange for students to complete tests at the Monroe Virtual High School Center or at an alternate location using a local proctor. Sophomore status students are required to complete the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE) during the state mandated testing period.
Do students receive a grade in each subject?
Yes. Most courses are based on a four point grading scale, with letter grades assigned based upon grading percentages. A grade is issued only when the student has completed all of the required assignments, tests, and/or projects. Each course will indicate the level of acceptable performance and grade scale used. Service learning, work study, and physical education are pass/fail.
Is the student provided with transcripts or other documentation?
Yes. As with any other public education program, official student records are maintained. These records track student grades, credits earned, and progress toward graduation. Transcripts are available upon student and/or parent request.
Is there a set school schedule?
No. Flexible scheduling is one of the unique characteristics of the Independent Education Program that allows students to study in the evening, weekends, early morning; any time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To optimize the Monroe Virtual High School experience, it is recommended that each student build a study schedule that best matches their learning style, and that will assure steady progress. Having a personal schedule helps students stay focused and make consistent progress toward course completion and graduation.
